The year 1953 was marked by the discovery of the double-twisted ladder structure of the Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) by the American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist James Dewey Watson (born 6 April 1928) and the English molecular biologist, biophysicist, and neuroscientist Francis Harry Compton Crick (8 June 1916 – 28 July 2004).
This discovery was a landmark achievement for modern sciences in general and molecular biology in particular and had an enormous impact on a large variety of scientific fields.
Thus, this important discovery paved the way firstly for DNA research, genetic engineering, rapid gene sequencing and later also genetic fingerprinting, modern forensics, mapping of the human genome and, in future, possibly also gene therapy.
Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for their research on the structure of nucleic acids.
