1834 - 1896

William Morris, born on 24th March 1834 in Walthamstow (then Essex), was a renowned artist, writer, designer, craftsman, and social activist. His multifaceted talents and strong convictions led him to become one of the most significant cultural figures of his era, deeply influencing art, design, and social thought in 19th-century Britain.

A leading figure of the Arts & Crafts movement, he advocated for the return to traditional craftsmanship, use of high-quality materials, the integration of art in everyday life and against the dehumanizing effects of industrial production.

Through his firm, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., he manufactured iconic textiles, wallpapers, furniture, stained glass, and books, often characterised by intricate patterns and vivid natural motives.

He also was a prolific writer of poetry, prose romances and he translated Icelandic sagas. He was a passionate socialist, believing art and labour should be joyful and meaningful, to benefit all of society's members.

His enduring legacy lies in his profound impact on design, his literary contributions, and his unwavering commitment to a more equitable and aesthetically rich world.

William Morris passed on 3rd October 1896 aged 62 in Hammersmith, UK
